Garage Sale

I go through this about once a year - the need to get rid of clutter. I'm not sure who first coined the term "spring cleaning" but it's a phenomenon I still don't understand. Maybe it's because we spend so long hibernating in the winter that we get tired of looking at all of our crap.

My aunt and cousin had a joint garage sale this weekend so I jumped on that bandwagon for purging junk and went through the house like a mad woman looking for things that other people would possibly want to buy. Cameron jumped with me and finally agreed to get rid of the video game rocker chair that has been sitting in the attic for two garage sale seasons now. We even put our bedroom TV in the sale without a replacement ready - Cameron will probably convince me to buy a new one soon out of "I'm having surgery" pity. I already know I will cave... more to come in later blogs on the surgery subject.

It's amazing to me what people will actually buy from a garage sale. For instance - a half empty bottle of hair gel for 10 cents - really? You could get yourself a BRAND NEW bottle for a buck, but 10 cents is a good deal! This year's hot garage sale items include: used finger nail polish, picture frames with Biblical references, old make up, broken electronic equipment, and old cell phones. So for those of you out there considering to have a sale later this summer, you know what to stock up on.

Business was pretty slow, I blame it on gas prices (I like to blame most things on that these days). I would sit and listen for the sound of cars slowing down only for my hopes to be drowned with disappointment. I about jumped out of my chair only to see the mailman stopping - and then again when he rounded the block. We also had a lot of drive by shoppers - I can't stand them.

Anyways, as I sat there pondering whether or not all of this effort was really worth $65, I began to wonder if we are the only country in the world that does garage sales. We're probably one of the only countries that HAS garages in the first place. But seriously, how many other people in the world have so much junk collected in their home that they can take a good portion of it away to sell and their house still looks fully decorated? That's sad to me.

We are truly blessed.
